Paper artist Rachael Ashe began her residency in The Leeway studio this month and the former photographer is already making headway on her own project while preparing to host two studio events.

“It is a more dedicated day when I come into The Leeway,” says Ashe of her residency so far. “Even just three weeks in, I’ve gotten a lot done.”

Currently working on a project about pattern design, including Japanese textiles and Islamic designs from architecture, Rachael is hoping to put together an installation incorporating these patterns.

“I’m self-taught and I do a lot of free form designs,” she says. “I wanted to use this time to explore something more formal and get away from always working towards exhibitions.”

In addition to hosting a Leeway studio visit on June 6, Ashe will be leading Emily Carr University’s participation in Vancouver Draw Down. She will be working with fellow artist Christina Norberg and Creative Mornings Vancouver to guide participants through a large-scale collaborative drawing.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” says Ashe. She hopes to see participants of all skill levels and to show that anyone can draw, as she only recently resumed drawing herself.

Ashe started out as a photographer, but found something was lost in the switch from film to digital. She moved into more hands-on work – collage, sculpture and now paper-cutting.

“I’ve been doing it for three years but I feel like a have a lot to learn,” she says. “It’s very meditative and I’m not a naturally focused or patient person.”

Despite the concentration required in her work, she’s enjoyed the community aspect of The Leeway, working alongside members as well as the studio techs.

“I always worked at home, so for me it’s interesting to be working in a studio and working around other artists,” she says. “Also, it’s great to have so much space!’

Rachael’s work is currently on display on Katami Designs. You can see more of her work on her website, her Instagram page and find her on Twitter @rachaelashe.
